November’s poem is by Edgar Allan Poe.

On the first of every month, I send a poem to a random, and ever-expanding, group of past and present colleagues. I’ve been doing it for about 16 years.

This month’s is The Raven, by Edgar Allan Poe. Partly because it’s Halloween, and partly because the Baltimore Ravens were named after it (the only sports team named after a poem?), and they have a huge game against the Bills today.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”

O wind, rend open the heat,
cut apart the heat,
rend it to tatters.

Fruit cannot drop
through this thick air—
fruit cannot fall into heat

By the end, we’d captured Hertford Town FC’s best season in years and screened the finished film to a packed audience on Father’s Day. A brilliant way to celebrate a club that’s become such a big part of the town.

It was one of those projects where everyone went above and beyond. Our tiny crew pulled it out of the bag, the club trusted us with incredible access, and the players and staff gave us a story we loved telling.

On the first of every month, I send a poem to a random, and ever-expanding, group of past and present colleagues. I’ve been doing it for about 16 years.

This month’s is Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, by Robert Frost.

I learned this in school and it’s one of the few poems I can recite. I did so at a party a few years ago (because I’m a terrible singer). It landed quite well, I’m happy to report.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

On the first of every month, I send a poem to a random, and ever-expanding, group of past and present colleagues. I’ve been doing it for about 16 years.

This month’s is Sea-Weed, by D.H. Lawrence, from Pansies.

Writing from County Kerry, where the beaches are big and empty and the water is cold and often sea-weedy. I love this short reflection. It’s about resilience and being present. And it reminds me of Geof’s favourite joke, circa 2019: why was the water yellow?…

Sea-weed sways and sways and swirls
as if swaying were its form of stillness;
and if it flushes against fierce rock
it slips over it as shadows do, without hurting itself.

April’s poem is by Langston Hughes.

On the first of every month, I send a poem to a random, and ever-expanding, group of past and present colleagues. I’ve been doing it for about 16 years.

This month’s is Mother to Son, by Langston Hughes.

I mostly know the name Langston Hughes because he was mentioned as a Beat writer from time to time. He had a tough time of it really: racism, McCarthyism, and probably a life lived in the closet. I don’t know much of his work, but I love the line “life for me ain’t been no crystal stair”. Crystal Stair is a great name for something.

Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now—
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

I saw Kae at All Points East a few years ago, and their performance of People’s Faces blew me away. The last line is such a simple call to arms. Lovely to start the month with a little hope.
