Poem of the month: The Raven
November’s poem is by Edgar Allan Poe.
On the first of every month, I send a poem to a random, and ever-expanding, group of past and present colleagues. I’ve been doing it for about 16 years.
This month’s is The Raven, by Edgar Allan Poe. Partly because it’s Halloween, and partly because the Baltimore Ravens were named after it (the only sports team named after a poem?), and they have a huge game against the Bills today.
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”
