Poem of the month: Sea-Weed
August’s poem is by D.H. Lawrence.
On the first of every month, I send a poem to a random, and ever-expanding, group of past and present colleagues. I’ve been doing it for about 16 years.
This month’s is Sea-Weed, by D.H. Lawrence, from Pansies.
Writing from County Kerry, where the beaches are big and empty and the water is cold and often sea-weedy. I love this short reflection. It’s about resilience and being present. And it reminds me of Geof’s favourite joke, circa 2019: why was the water yellow?…
Sea-weed sways and sways and swirls
as if swaying were its form of stillness;
and if it flushes against fierce rock
it slips over it as shadows do, without hurting itself.
